Using Text-to-Speech in Making Instructional Videos

Instructional videos play an essential role in conveying information and training and instructing employees. In addition to a voice-over, Text-to-Speech is increasingly used to provide spoken instructions in an instructional video. Why do we choose Text-to-Speech in one situation and a voice-over in another? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both methods?

Text-to-Speech

Text-to-Speech is a technology that automatically converts written text into spoken words. The main advantage of Text-to-Speech in instructional videos is efficiency. It takes less time and money to convert text into speech than hiring a human voice actor. In addition, Text-to-Speech systems can generate text in multiple languages and accents, which makes the globalization of instructional videos easier. Maintaining such videos is faster and cheaper this way.

On the other hand, Text-to-Speech sometimes lacks the natural intonation and emotion that a human voice can provide. This can reduce viewer engagement and convey information less effectively. People find it harder to identify with a robotic voice than with a person. However, developments in this area are currently moving very fast and the quality is improving rapidly.

Voice-over

A voice-over uses human voice actors. The great advantage of this is that it provides a more natural and human sound with emotion, intonation and expression. This makes the viewer more involved in the content of the instructional film and makes the information easier to understand and remember.

However, a voice-over also has disadvantages. A voice-over is more expensive and time-consuming than Text-to-Speech, because you have to hire professional voice actors. Processing changes and/or performing maintenance is therefore more difficult. For qualitative reasons, the entire voice-over of the film is often replaced for a small change in text.

What is the best choice?

The choice between Text-to-Speech and a voice-over in instructional videos depends on several factors, including budget, target audience and desired level of engagement. If the desire is to keep costs low and the informative content of the instructional video is most important, Text-to-Speech may be a suitable choice. When the instructional video is intended to inspire, motivate or create an emotional connection, a voice-over is the best option.
